I read about this type of snow shovel in the third edition of "Bicycling Science" by David Gordon Wilson (MIT Press, 2004; see pages 402-404). The problem with traditional snow shovels is that they engage the small muscles of the arms and shoulders to lift and discard the snow. The Garant type (which Wilson calls "the Swedish snowblower") engages the larger muscles of the legs and permits a more natural posture. Smart use of the human body. You push the shovel along the ground until the bucket fills with snow, and then you create a sort of ramp of snow at the sides of your driveway and scoot the shovel up the ramp to dump the snow. You're never actually lifting. So far, I've used it for one rather powdery 6-inch snowfall here in the Hudson Valley, and it was a revelation. I silently beat my neighbor's gas driven snowblower, hah. Haven't yet tested it in wet, heavy, deep snow, but theoretically it ought to work as well.

This is great! I didn't have to lift ANY snow with it! Just lift slightly on the handle and push to cut down into the snow and mostly just keep pushing forward with a slight downward force! When it's full - just push down and glide on top of the snow to the dump spot and lift the handle beyond straight up to pack it and pull back! Sooo easy and no more aching back! YOU WON'T REGRET IT UNLESS YOU DON'T GET ANY SNOW!!!
